Season four of a factual series is in the edit. The three earlier seasons sit on a shelf of drives, and the assistant editor works on a laptop with one free port. The director wants the moment a contributor described the flood in season two. Nobody logged the line.
How Stringout solves this
01
The director wants a line nobody logged
Search the words the contributor used, or describe what was on screen. Stringout searches the transcripts and visual analysis of every indexed season, including footage on drives that are not connected.
Search covers footage Stringout indexed while its drive was connected. Plug each drive in once and let transcription and analysis finish before it goes back on the shelf.
02
The clip has to go in the cut before the drive comes back
Read the transcript around the result to check what was said before and after the line, and hover over the thumbnail to scrub through the shot. Both come from previews stored on the Mac, within its local cache limit. Add the clip to the season four project and put it in the cut.
On the Mac that indexed the drive, playing the clip and rendering the timeline need the original, so they wait for the drive. The sequence can go to the editor before then. The export references the original files, and Stringout reports how many clips are on a drive that is not connected.
03
The laptop has one free port and a shelf of drives
The file page names the drive and the folder that hold the clip. Fetch that drive and plug it in. Work that was waiting for it resumes when it reconnects.
On a Pro team, the same search covers footage the team’s other Macs have indexed and synced, even when that Mac or its drive is offline. A clip a teammate has opened, or one in a shared project, plays for teammates from team storage while the drive is on the shelf. The clips a team watches again are usually ones somebody has opened before.
The result
The clip is in the cut before the drive is back
The assistant finds an unlogged line by its words, checks it in the transcript and adds it to the season four cut from the laptop. The file page names the drive to fetch, so only that drive takes the free port.
